Wild Basketry: Coiling with Grasses, Cattails and Leaves with Katie Grove
CLICK HERE to view images from the workshop.
Join New Paltz-based artist Katie Grove to learn the basics of basket making. In this workshop you will learn how to use grasses, cattails, daylily leaves, and many other natural materials to create coiled baskets.
Coiling is an ancient and versatile basketry technique in which a wrapping strand is sewn around coils of material to build a form. It is used around the world to create decorative and functional vessels. During the workshop we will discuss how to identify, harvest, and prepare a variety of local materials and how to coil baskets using a variety of stitches. We will also go on a harvest walk at the site to gather plants to incorporate into your basket. Everyone will leave with a basket, the skills to create more work in the future, and the inspiration to explore your local landscape.
This workshop will take place at The Al Held Foundation and is being presented in conjunction with RVAC's exhibition of new work by Laura Kaufman. Laura is a student of Katie Grove and has incorporated basket making techniques into her work. We will do a short tour of both the Held studio and Laura's exhibition.
River Valley Arts Collective is offering this workshop for free to Hudson Valley artists. All materials and tools will be provided, and lunch will be served. To register, please contact info@RVACollective.org. Space is limited–we will create a waiting list when the workshop is fully enrolled.
