This hands-on workshop will cover all of the steps - from finding to firing - needed to incorporate wild clay into a sustainable art practice. Combining discussion and experimentation, we’ll arrive at answers to the following questions: What exactly is clay? Where can it be found and how can it be properly identified? What’s the best way to responsibly dig for wild clay? How can its qualities be tested and adapted? What is required to process wild clay to make it suitable for throwing and hand building? How can wild clay be fired without access to expensive equipment? By engaging with and understanding the clays found in the Hudson Valley, workshop participants will become familiar with an incredible material that lies just below our feet and embodies the history and character of our region.
David Moldover, is a working potter and owner of The Newburgh Pottery, a communal ceramics studio offering courses, workshops, and studio memberships for potters and ceramicists of all levels.
River Valley Arts Collective is offering this workshop free of charge and specifically designed for Hudson Valley based artists. Lunch, materials, supplies, and tools will be provided.
