Candice Madey founded the pioneering Lower East Side gallery On Stellar Rays in 2008 and, for nine years, directed a program that garnered international recognition for a dynamic roster of artists working in painting, photography, sculpture, performance, sound, and video. Frequent collaborations with colleagues in other disciplines placed her exhibitions in a unique dialogue with craft, music, poetry, and literature. In 2018, she founded Stellar Projects, an art consulting and curatorial platform that advises to private collections and foundations.

Candice was a driving force behind the early careers of her gallery artists, in most cases, she presented their first solo shows. As her artists’ careers grew, she organized and fundraised for numerous institutional exhibitions and placed works in prominent museum collections. Over the course of her directorship, Candice worked on projects with the Museum of Modern Art, New York; MOMA PS1, Queens; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Whitney Museum of Art, New York; Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Rose Museum, Waltham, MA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; The Pulitzer Foundation, St Louis; Ballroom Marfa; Contemporary Austin; Dallas Contemporary; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Zurich; Kunsthaus Baselland; Lenbachhaus, Munich; Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover; Fondazione Prada, Venice, among other institutions.

Both as director of On Stellar Rays and independently, Candice has published eight artists’ monographs, working with artists from initial concept, contributing texts or commissioning writers, to final stages of design, printing and distribution. She has also supported numerous other print projects including zines, artists’ books and posters.

Previously, Candice worked in Client Advisory at Christie’s, consulting to prominent collectors across departments, and in curatorial and educational positions at The Wexner Center for the Arts, The Ohio State University’s History of Art Department, and the Akron Art Museum. Throughout her 20—year career, Candice has been an advisor for private collections and estates and realized numerous independent curatorial and writing projects. She is a member of The New Art Dealers Association (NADA) (2009–present), and a board member of Metropolis Ensemble (2007–present).

Candice has a Bachelor of Arts degree in French Literature and Art History (2000), and a Master of Business Administration (2004), both from The Ohio State University, and studied Art History at l’Université de Franche-Comté, Besançon, from 1999–2000.
